Alignment - the superpower of organizations
In the fast-paced world of business, organizations constantly seek ways to gain a competitive edge. While innovations such as AI play a crucial role, there's one often-overlooked superpower that can propel organizations to new heights: alignment. Alignment transcends mere agreement - it's about orchestrating collective efforts to efficiently achieve shared objectives. It touches almost all aspects of a job, especially in cases where team effort is required.
This is particularly evident in modeling in Excel. The benefit of the program is that it is super flexible – anything can be done. The drawback is that, as you might have noticed, anything will be done. This is a nightmare with respect to an organization’s alignment and consequently negatively impacts a team's performance.
So, what are the tangible benefits of alignment?
- Get things done quicker: When everyone in an organization/project team is aligned in their thinking with regards to modeling principles and the implications thereof, tasks can be completed faster. There's no time wasted on aligning approaches. Instead, teams can focus their energy on executing plans swiftly and effectively. The team can divide and conquer a task, as all members have the same approach towards creating a model and understanding what a good model structure consists of.
- Reduced error susceptibility: Alignment minimizes the risk of errors. People can easily spot mistakes when their thinking is aligned, due to the clear, unified buildup of models and the consistently applied conventions.
- Allow for replacement: Aligned thinking enables seamless replacements when team members need to step in for one another on projects due to unforeseen circumstances such as illness or vacation. This adaptability ensures the continuity of operations, shielding the team from undue stress. In a high-turnover world, this aspect is especially important as it ensures continuity when people leave the team.
- Make files reusable: Alignment allows for the standardization of files—making files reusable across different projects and units—leveraging the full power of the organization. The final model can be used as precedence, as the shared understanding of good modeling makes it unnecessary to start something from scratch in the next instance. I am convinced that in most organizations, almost everything has already been created once. Just imagine if all employees of decades past had been aligned in their thinking.
To reap the benefits, one element is paramount. It's not enough to impart alignment principles once – sustained success requires continuous reinforcement and diligent application in day-to-day operations. By embracing alignment, both individually and collectively, organizations can unleash their full potential and achieve excellence on a scale. Thus, acquire it, apply it, enforce it!
